Dance

Technique

When I started dance classes, I began training in ballet and tap. Since then, I’ve grown to take all styles of dance, my favorite being contemporary. I joined a pre-professional dance company and earned many opportunities to do one of the things I loved the most: performing. When you’re performing on a stage, there’s no comparison to the rush of adrenaline or the joy of applause- performing shows that your hard work was worth it. As I grew as a dancer, I learned the significance of artistry and the value of one’s quality of movement. Learning how to make dance look like it initiated the music that paired with it was very significant to how I performed.

Choreography

Further along in my dance journey, I received opportunities to choreograph. This lead to the creation of 5 original works before I even turned 18. Choreography gave me the ability to see an artistic vision come to life. As I worked with my peers, I learned the significance of being a leader and the true impact I could have on other dancers. I then was able to choreograph solos for my participation in the Distinguished Young Women program. I’ve choreographed many different styles of pieces and am looking forward to choreographing for State Dance Company at NC State.

Why Dance?

For me, dance has been an emotional outlet with my studio being my second home. For the same reason why people stick with sports teams or other performing arts, dance was a part of my identity as well. I’m proud to be a dancer and am passionate about solving the problems within the dance community. Though I don’t plan to dance professionally, there is something magical that happens when technical movement pairs with music. As I keep learning and growing, dance is both my past and my future.
